With stunning performances of five unique dance pieces, Designers of the Dance takes you a step further, into the studio with legendary dancers and choreographers to learn about the works and process that go into making these five ballets great: The Nutcracker, Leonid Lavrovsky’s Romeo and Juliet, Lar Lubovitch’s Othello, Alastair Marriott’s Lieder, and Yuri Possikhov’s Diving into the Lilacs.

Othello, by choreographer Lar Lubovitch, and original music by Elliott Goldenthal, was created for American Ballet Theatre in 1997. Join Julie Kent and Marcelo Gomes in rehearsal with Lar and interviews with each before watching the incredible pas de deux.

Romeo and Juliet by Leonid Lavrovsky, with music by Prokofiev, was a revolution in ballet and the source for the many later versions of this classic ballet. Leonid’s son Mikhail, former Principal at the Bolshoi and today a Ballet Master joins Bolshoi stars Evgenia Obraztsova and Vladislav Lantratov in the studio and in interviews about this contemporary classic.
Diving into the Lilacs unites three generations of Bolshoi Ballet Academy in a ballet that captures their experiences. Choreographer Yuri Possokhov joins San Francisco Ballet Principals Maria Kochetkova and Gennadi Nedvigin in rehearsal and interviews.
